Originally released a year after Quake 2, the Ground Zero mission pack offers Quake 2 players more of what they loved the first time: scary bad guys, excellent deathmatch levels, and a whole host of new weapons and power-ups. Whereas the storyline in Quake 2 involved the nameless space marine traveling to the planet Stroggos to destroy the “big gun” that had been created with the sole purpose of destroying our beloved planet, in Ground Zero you realize that the Strogg threat is far from over. After the big gun was destroyed, the Stroggs created a new device called the gravity well whose catastrophic potential for Earth was just as powerful as the big gun’s. Your mission? Destroy that well. Ground Zero’s 14 new single-player levels are more similar than dissimilar to the original levels in Quake 2, so gamers intent on experiencing something decidedly different will be disappointed.
